Grace Association Microcredit Program

Mary Manning

My experience as a volunteer with Village Exchange International (VEI) was extremely rewarding. In a short period of time, I learned a lot about the development challenges in Ghana and the projects through with VEI seeks to address them. I volunteered on their microfinance project and felt that in a just few weeks, I actually contributed something to both the NGO and to the local community.

In addition to rewarding project work, Yannick and Aline and the other volunteers at VEI created a wonderful social environment and I feel that I made lifelong friends. There was a unique mix of nationalities, backgrounds, and expertise which made for interesting dinner time conversations. This informal learning was as useful and eye opening and as the formal volunteer experience. Unlike some NGOs, VEI makes an effort to integrate into the community and to support local initiatives. Visits to the rural villages around Ho and weekend trips to Adaklu and the waterfalls were highlights in this respect.I highly recommend volunteering with VEI to anyone who wants to gain experience in development and make a contribution to worthwhile projects. If you have any questions or would like more information about my experience with VEI, please feel free to contact me at mman3000@usyd.edu.au.

Kindest regards,
